On July 9, OpenAI officially released its new model series, GPT-5.6, to the public. The family comes in three distinct variants:
- Sol — the flagship and most capable version, built for complex coding, scientific research, and agentic workflows.
- Terra — a mid-tier option that matches the performance of the previous GPT-5.5 model while costing roughly half as much.
- Luna — the fastest and most budget-friendly variant, aimed at everyday, lightweight tasks.
CEO Sam Altman said Sol is about 54% more token-efficient on coding tasks compared to earlier models. Pricing also varies by tier, calculated per million tokens, with Sol at the higher end and Luna positioned as the cheapest option.
The rollout carried a political backstory as well.
